Starting with students as young as 4 years of age, the Hattori/Williamson School of Ballet offers programs for people of all ages and abilities. Families have lots of choices when selecting a dance studio in Calgary. One of the first things many parents ask is, “How much will dance classes in Calgary cost?” But there are many equally if not more important things to consider when selecting a school. Here are a few questions to ask before enrolling your child at a dance studio in Calgary.

One of the first things to ask when selecting a dance studio in Calgary is the qualifications of the dance instructors employed there. Not all dance teachers are the same, and there are no laws governing who can teach your child and who is not qualified. So, this should be the very first question you ask when considering dance classes in Calgary. A quality dance studio will be affiliated with a provincial or national organization that certifies instructors, such as Royal Academy of Dance. Instructors can also be college graduates with dance degrees or equivalent experience in the field. There are many ways in which dance educators can be qualified, so make sure your child is in the hands of a professional educator.

A quality studio in Calgary will require instructors to be CPR and first aid certified. A great studio in Calgary will have an on-site AED along with staples such as a fire extinguisher and first aid kit. These items should be centrally located and easy to reach in an emergency.

Teachers should never force students beyond their natural flexibility or encourage ballet students to “turn out” their feet farther than their natural rotation will allow. While it would certainly be distracting to allow parents to sit in on each and every class, there are other ways in which parents can view their child’s weekly progress. Some studios in Calgary have windows into the classroom. This can be a great way to see the students in action, but also allows the students to be aware they have an audience. The best way to view class is through a monitor into the waiting area. Low-profile cameras in the dance room can allow parents to be comfortable knowing their kids are participating and learning.

It is important for the instructor to be able to see the student’s body alignment. Therefore, baggy clothing, jeans, sweatshirts and other street wear is not appropriate for dance classes in Calgary. A leotard and tights will allow the instructor to give constructive feedback to the student (which will help develop strong technique) while still covering enough of the body to be modest. I didn’t start dance until my early 20s. I am a bit of an anomaly in the dance community as most professional dancers start when they are very young. I wanted to create a safe space specifically for adults based on my own dance and fitness journey. Maybe you have never danced before and you have always wanted to try, perhaps you want to stay in shape doing something that is fun, or maybe you danced when you were young and now you just want to experience the joy of movement again. At Free Spirit we foster an inclusive community where you can feel free to explore without judgment. It’s good to try new things because you never know what new and exciting things you might find out about yourself. I never knew that one dance class in Cuba over 20 years ago would lead into a passion that is now my career. I also wanted to create a space where you can experience workouts that are fun! Dance is fun! Fitness is fun!

Free Spirit Dance was named not only to represent my own journey of finding freedom to break free and become what I was called to be, but it was also named to inspire others to do the same! It’s about finding freedom from within ourselves. I am a living example that is never too late to be what you might have been! What I love most about movement is that it is just good food for the soul! It makes you feel alive!
