4worldlovers: Welcome to Free Spirit Dance, a dance and fitness studio just for adults. A place where everyone is welcome, free to express themselves and free to live life out loud and proud! I didn’t start dance until my early 20s. I am a bit of an anomaly in the dance community as most professional dancers start when they are very young. I wanted to create a safe space specifically for adults based on my own dance and fitness journey. Maybe you have never danced before and you have always wanted to try, perhaps you want to stay in shape doing something that is fun, or maybe you danced when you were young and now you just want to experience the joy of movement again. At Free Spirit we foster an inclusive community where you can feel free to explore without judgment. It’s good to try new things because you never know what new and exciting things you might find out about yourself. I never knew that one dance class in Cuba over 20 years ago would lead into a passion that is now my career. I also wanted to create a space where you can experience workouts that are fun! Dance is fun! Fitness is fun!

Free Spirit Dance was named not only to represent my own journey of finding freedom to break free and become what I was called to be, but it was also named to inspire others to do the same! It’s about finding freedom from within ourselves. I am a living example that is never too late to be what you might have been! What I love most about movement is that it is just good food for the soul! It makes you feel alive!

Looking to take your dance journey to the next level? We have dance crews that boast training from Hip Hop pioneers. Check out Flomatk and LV8, our audition based crews for adult dancers. For our younger dancers, we have our Beast Machine crew for 8-18 year olds, and Evolution Crew for 6-9 year olds, they are non-auditioned, and produce incredibly skilled dancers that will also have performance and travel opportunities.

Summit School of Dance & Music has been chosen as a Favourite in the 2017 Metro Community Choice Awards – Best Dance Studio category!

We had been holding off on signing our daughter up for classes next year to see how some other activities went for her over the summer. But she was so proud of herself today after the recital that there is no way we can’t put her back into it!

We’ve danced in a couple of places in Calgary and found Summit School of Dance to be the overall most satisfying experience. The teachers are passionate and professional, and unlike other schools, the fact that our daughter isn’t a perfect ballerina body type has never been an issue. We like that they reinforce positive body image and don’t make her feel like there are classes she can’t do because she’s not “the type”. It would be nice if they had their recitals closer to where we live, but I am sure getting a space large enough in the city to hold everyone at once isn’t as easy as picking up the phone. It can be a little pricey, but we have a son in hockey and it doesn’t even come close to touching that so we don’t complain too much about price.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff at Summit School of Dance and Music. My daughter is a very shy and quiet girl and with the continued positive role modelling from the teachers at Summit it has brought her out of her shell. Her grades have improved as well as her confidence, her teacher at school commented and said whatever we were doing to continue it.. I also love the fact Summit is so committed to teaching dance technique and not just interested in teaching cool moves. Children who dance should have structure as well as strength in the art and not just learn routines Summit does this with pride so thank you all at Summit.
