Jessamyn’s bold experimentations in a variety of media: paint, crayon, marker, and ink capture the inhibition of street art, while Susana’s rigorous approach to achieving the perfect balance of colour relies on her investigations into tonality. Maria’s luminous layered hand-cut photography collages lean into digital technologies to evoke an alter modern production of the organic world processed through non-traditional mediums.

Fine Art, Fine Wine | Sommelier Led Art & Wine Pairing with Jessamyn Box

A very special experience awaits you on Friday, May 12th at Gibson Fine Art.

From 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., artist-and-sommelier Jessamyn Box will lead us on a unique and curated adventure: pairing fine wines with fine art with not only her artwork but also the art of Susana Espinoza and Maria Munar!

Jessamyn, who is both a Level 4 Sommelier and an accomplished painter, has selected six vintages to be paired with two of her newest artworks, two works for Susana Espinoza and two works from Maria Munar as part of our latest exhibitions at GFA.

At the event, Jessamyn will walk us through six stations where she will spend time discussing each wine selection and her reasoning for pairing it with the chosen artwork. Guests will be invited to taste and to learn about the six different wines, as well as the corresponding paintings.

Tickets are $20; light accouterments will be served to complement the tasting.

Jessamyn completed the prestigious Wine Spirit Education Trust (W.S.E.T.), Level 4 Diploma in 2016, and then performed sommelier duties in a succession of top Vancouver restaurants, all the while advancing her dynamic and lively canvases. We are thrilled to have her back in Calgary, where she is now part of the fabulous team at J Webb, conducting tastings and sharing wine wisdom as well as working at Calgary's Major Tom restaurant as one of its esteemed sommeliers.

4worldlovers: Newzones Gallery of Contemporary Art is one of North America’s leading contemporary art galleries representing prominent Albertan, Canadian and international artists. Newzones’ program has an emphasis on process-oriented artwork, challenging both the traditional use of materials and formal aesthetics through painting, photography and sculpture.

Founded by Helen Zenith and Tamar Zenith, Newzones opened June 4, 1992 in an old steel plant in Calgary’s warehouse district. In 1997, Newzones constructed its own freestanding facility, designed by architect Peter Lawrence Wood. On the main floor, this architecturally modern building features three galleries, a viewing area, outdoor sculpture courtyard and a glass meeting room. The second floor boasts a sculpture gallery and two administrative offices overlooking the galleries on the main floor. The gallery is located in Calgary’s uptown design and gallery district.

4worldlovers: The Knox Contemporary Gallery of Art has brought together an eclectic array of contemporary art from artists around the world that Celebrates And Explores The Human Figure, Sexuality & Identity in it’s first online exhibition “Xposed Naked and Not Afraid”.

Doro Buch is a Calgary based contemporary visual artist. Originally a social scientist, she blends her curiosity about individuals and society with her passion to paint. She creates collage like arrangements juxtaposing the imaginary, symbolic and the real in both oil and acrylic. Her work touches upon social, political, environmental and human issues. The centre of her attention is always the individual – observing or (re)acting. With her brightly coloured representational paintings Doro comments, with a sense of humour on the times in which we live. Doro wants to share the spark of creativity. Her goal is the cultivation of creative exchange and curiosity, whether this takes place through community engagement projects, in her art workshops, or in exhibitions.

Chlan studied Fine Art at the University of Saskatchewan and ACAD. Art is a way of life for her and she feels very fortunate to be able to do what she loves. Chlan’s unique contemporary colourful art is displayed on canvas or plexiglass and she enjoys creating art to evoke positive emotion and conversation. Chlan also shares her passion for art by teaching kids and volunteers in schools creating art with students. The art is then auctioned at a fundraising event which has helped raise over $400,000 for schools in the Calgary area.

XOX Unknown is a self-taught visual artist passionate about feeding imagination through experimentation while remaining fluid with mediums, techniques, styles and subject matter. Being strongly opposed to judgement humanity places on each other, has prompted XOX to create anonymously, removing the confounding variables of gender, ethnicity, class, age, physical limitations and appearance. Allowing the art to be appreciated for what it is, not who created it.

The Rockstar series began with XOX Unknowns’ admiration for musicians and the power music has to create and evoke emotionally charged memories. Janie Lockwood's creative focus has been to emphasize the beauty of nature by simplifying and abstracting her subject matter. Her goal is to have the piece enjoyed from a distance but attract the viewer closer for a more intimate look at the surface. The substrate is textured before painting with detailed patterns applied at the end to increase the participation of the viewer. In doing this

Janie hopes to create a feeling of mystery and entice the viewer to become thoroughly involved within each piece.

Perspective from the sky. Observing our world from an elevated view is disorienting. A familiar neighborhood becomes strange. Landmarks disappear. Patterns shift. Colours blur. Grey ribbons of asphalt dotted with tiny vehicles take on mysterious air. Fields of grain become intriguing agricultural landscapes. Tall buildings are floating squares, rectangles and circles. I look for new passages by visually exploring paradigms.

Working in nudes and portraits, Shelagh’s work focuses on the layers of experience and memory carried within the human body. Her work explores the construction of the self, involving gendered beauty, body image issues, vulnerability, isolation and acceptance – as well as the ever-changing nature of relationships with ourselves and others. She innovates by combining various cultural interpretations of the human form with more traditional ideas, which capture authenticity and create depth within her visions. Inspired by the universality and vulnerability of the human body, Shelagh creatively employs methods of reflection, movement and shadow to create timeless images. Long and multiple exposures evoke the human ability to carry multitudes within – often simultaneously, always over time. These exposures explore similarities and differences, human inter-connection, experiences and moments, while maintaining cognizant perspective of past memories and experiences. Shelagh’s work then becomes a question of exploring and examining the diversity of human experience.
